Motorcycle Tyre TypesModern motorcycles can vary widely in specification and design, from scooters to all-terrain motorbikes. Whatever you want to partake in there is a motorcycle to suit every requirement and applications including race, sport, street, touring, off-road and leisure. With this in mind, motorcycle tyres should be chosen with both the motorcycle type and application in consideration. For guidance or if in any doubt, you should always:
a) refer to the motorcycle owner’s manual
b) consult a tyre specialist such as us at Bromley Tyres Warrington
c) use the motorcycle manufacturer’s fitment guide book
Three basic tyre construction types exist on motorcycle tyres – radial ply, diagonal cross ply and bias belted.
Depending upon the motorcycle wheel type, these may be either tubeless (no tube required) or tube type (requiring an inner tube).
It is recommended that motorcycle tyres are always fitted in matched pairs for optimum performance. In certain European countries, it is actually illegal to mix tyre manufacturer brands on the same bike. Local motorcycle tyre regulations should always be checked when taking your bike abroad.
Exclusive motorbike tyres are available for sporting events, some of which are unsuitable for road use and are marked accordingly (normally with NHS – Not For Highway Service).
